It had been some time now since the portal had vanished, and Fin was only slightly closer to crafting something that would inhibit his magic when he wanted to be certain he was in control- Not it. He had a solid idea of how it needed to be done, having tested some less than ideal variations first, and was armed with more knowledge than ever before. However, he still lacked the talent to do much about it. He'd considered going to Eliot for guidance, but truthfully he knew the best person to turn to was Felix. After all, the wizard had known another incarnation of him and was armed with knowledge and warnings that Fin knew now he absolutely needed to take to heart.
His brief visit to the home of his other self had been unsettling, and it had left him apprehensive and uncertain about, well, everything. However, Fin allowed himself to feel hopeful as he knocked on Shannon and Felix's door.
"Felix? Are you in?" he called, hoping he wasn't disturbing them. Though it wasn't as though he could call ahead he supposed.

Felix opened the door promptly, dressed in what looked like silk pajama bottoms and a coordinating dressing gown that he probably had not acquired from the wardrobe room back at the Dome. He looked surprised to see Fin, but not displeased.

"Well, hello. What brings you by? Oh, come in, Shannon's just... taking a nap." Felix stepped out of the way of the door, arching his brows in a way that communicated very clearly that Felix was the reason Shannon required sleep in the middle of the day.

Though he was tempted for an instant, Felix refrained from telling Fin anything remotely like I told you so. That Fin would seek out his Fae heritage had been entirely inevitable; no one could ever have talked him out of it.

"I can see a number of things have changed. Your wardrobe has improved drastically, for one," Felix observed, waving Finlay in over the threshold and gesturing him to the small living area. There were significantly more books, now, lined up on a few shelves. It was nothing like Felix's real library, but he'd brought as much from that brief respite home as he could.

One thing that hadn't changed was that Felix still wasn't a very good host. It didn't occur to him to offer a drink, not even of the fairly decent tea they'd stashed. Instead, he swirled along toward the high-back chair he preferred. "Don't feel you have to stand on ceremony. What sort of help are you after?"

Felix listened and didn't interrupt, with an expression that passed for neutral, on him. (Felix never quite managed to completely erase some air of judgement in the arch of his brows or the set of his mouth. Unfortunate, but not unusual.) Listening, he could piece together what might have happened, but without witnessing it first-hand he never really would know.

At least this Finlay had a clearer head on his shoulders than the other one.

Felix reached out and took the padlock, turning it over in his hand to inspect it. "Because cold iron inhibits Fae magic. I've read several theories as to why that is, and none of them agree." He looked up. "What is your intention with this? Do you want something you can carry around with you? Like a... like shock collar?"

The Fin that Felix had first known would not have come to him like this, would not have been so nakedly earnest. From their first meeting, Felix had certainly seen him as a different person, but the difference had never been so marked as this. And then, based on what Fin had said, Felix had to wonder if the man he'd once known was... gone. The thoughts simmered in the back of his mind, tugging at him as he tried to focus on the magic right in front of him.

He lifted the padlock again and gave it another thoughtful look. Then he leaned over to one of the side tables and picked up a carved wood box that looked like it might have cost more than the entire living room set that came with the sleepy little cottage. From inside the box he started taking out his wizard rings, silver and moonstone, and sliding them on his fingers. "First I need to examine what you've already done. I admit I'm surprised that you created a self-inhibitor. I'm sure I could find a way to lock someone else's magic, but I don't know that mine would be very pleased if I were doing it to myself."

Felix did not miss Fin's reaction to his rings. They held no inherent power themselves, but Felix had been channeling his magic through them for more than five years, and they had taken on some aspects of his power. Felix would have to take care to keep them out of reach.

And keep himself out of reach, too. Felix's power ran through every pore of him, and in this strange in-between world, it hummed closer to the surface and flowed more easily than even in the heart of the Mirador, with the Virtu singing beneath him. It would be so easy to unleash it, and go beyond merely inhibiting Fin's power. He could bind it, trap it, and use it himself. Easy, yes, but unconscionable.

"As happy as anyone can be, in this place, I suppose." With his rings on, Felix began turning the lock over in his hands, shifting it to feel it from all orientations and positions. "If you want something you can wear in intimate moments, darling, you're going to want something more stylish than this, hm? Are we talking about a collar?" asked Felix leadingly.

Felix arched a brow at him, but it was accompanied by a silver of a smile, quite approving. He did not want to know the details, but the world around him was a bit less vanilla and he appreciated that.

"Don't worry, darling, I can defend myself. And, quite honestly, it doesn't hurt to learn some self-control. If you're relying on an object to keep you honest, it's going to become a crutch very quickly. Take it from an entire school of wizards who can barely function without their omphalos." Amid this miniature lecture, Felix swirled up from where he was sitting, and beckoned Fin to follow him with two fingers as he strode to the tiny kitchen and its clean, bare counter. Since neither he nor Shannon knew how to cook, this was the most activity their kitchen had seen in weeks. Every surface was perfectly clear.

"Metaphorically speaking, the binding will be stronger if we create something that physically binds, like a manacle. But that isn't very practical or very attractive, so I think what we're trying to make is something like an iron bracelet. Do you agree?"

Felix opened one of the cabinets and picked up a canister of salt, which was nearly the only thing in it aside from a few unmatched dishes. He poured out a generous circle onto the kitchen counter, and began smoothing it out with a fingertip. The padlock was placed inside, and Felix etched little swirls and curls and shapes in the edges of it. This took some time, and he frequently paused, muttered to himself, and pushed some of the salt back into formation to try again.

Once he appeared satisfied, he tilted his head just slightly, and cupped his hands, fingers spread, over the entire arrangement. Then he glanced up. "Any requests? I can't change the essential form, but I should be able to re-shape it and remain functional."

"Magic is symbolism," Felix commented, which was one of the things he said most often when talking about magic, and was practically predictable by this point. "When you are convincing the world to allow something that doesn't occur naturally in it, you want to approach it as cleanly as possible. Hence the uniform shapes, the balance, and the circles. Circles are mostly for containment, as this one is.

"None of this," he added, as he began to move his hands, drawing them apart and then back together as if kneading invisible dough, "is strictly necessary. Eliot will tell you his gestures aren't required, but they give the magic shape. Human magic has to be shaped through us, it's not a thing on its own like yours seems to be. We have to give it form."

As Felix said this, the iron padlock began to... distort. The shape of it relaxed, like it was beginning to melt, though there was no heat to be felt rising from the counter. Little by little, the shape started to change, stretching and growing, thinning out the heaviest part and thickening the curved locking bar.

"Darling, you wouldn't envy what I went through to get it," Felix murmured absently, his attention on the re-shaping of the lock into something that would open and close around Fin's wrist. "I've been studying magic and developing self-control for more than half my life. You've had magic for a few months. It's hardly a fair comparison."

His eyes had slipped half-closed, but now he opened the yellow one and glanced at Fin. "Hold up your wrist. Let me see if this is big enough."

Felix had a very plausible lie, well-prepared, that he'd been telling people for a decade about how he'd learned magic. He could package it all up and give it to Fin without a second thought, along with that fuck-off he seemed to expect... but it didn't feel right. Not with this Fin, so earnest and yet so undemanding of him. Still, telling him the real truth was unthinkable.

What he knew for absolute certain was that he could not make such a decision while he was performing transformation magic unlike anything he'd done before.

With a long exhale, Felix lowered his hands, and released the magic he had been working. "Try that on," he suggested, and dragged one finger through the salt to break the circle so that he could. A hint of a smile teased at his mouth. "Let's finish our work first, chatterbox. Life's story later."

"Please, don't," Felix said without thinking. He wasn't sure why he didn't want to be repaid, it just felt odd. Off. He shook his head, and touched one finger to the ring of salt. With only a faint wisp of steam, it was gone. Focusing on that did not erase the small smile of pleasure on his lips, though.

"What I mean is, I'd far prefer you to learn to control your magic on your own, without an inhibitor. The way you described it, like a misbehaving pet? That leads me to believe that you'll need to work on integrating into yourself more closely. This device," he nodded at the bracelet, "is quite the opposite of that. It's for temporary relief only, all right? It's not your permanent solution."

"No, Winter isn't exactly a bastion of self-control," Felix agreed, leaning on the counter. "All I can tell you from my own experience is that I had to learn to when to leash and when to wield my magic. If I didn't, the consequences were dire. I learned, or I hurt, and there was no in-between. I can't exactly recommend it as a training method, but it was exquisitely effective."

Felix spoke with a hard edge to his voice, hard and bright as diamond and just as unyielding. He was not going to elaborate and he was not going to say more about his own personal experiences. Just saying that much was its own exercise in self-control for him.

"Have you spoken to Eliot?"

Felix nodded, and at the expression on Fin's face, he actually smiled a touch. "Eliot has finer control than many mages I've met. He's terribly impressive, but don't you dare tell him I said so. His ego is already unmanageable." Despite the words, his tone was warm, and it was obvious he had a high opinion of Eliot.

"Has he told you much about where he's from? What is it called... Fillory?"
